Israeli forces utilized drones to fatally strike four Palestinian youths in Gaza in a horrifying incident captured in footage recently obtained by Al-Jazeera.
The distressing video depicts the youths walking along a dirt road in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. The youths were reportedly aiming to reach the remains of their destroyed homes. when the Israeli drone fired two missiles at them, resulting in the death of two of the youths.
The two remaining youths attempted to flee, but were relentlessly targeted by the Israeli drones, which fired additional missiles at them, ultimately killing them. One youth, who had tripped and fallen, was tragically struck down while on his knees on the road.
The impact of the missiles was devastating, leaving behind barely recognizable remains of the victims. Notably, the footage confirms that the youths were unarmed and posed no threat to Israeli forces.
Disturbingly, the drone transmitted live video feed to an Israeli command center as it carried out the deadly attacks. (Related: Gaza children now suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition while Israel denies access for aid convoys.)
The attack reportedly took place in early February, with the footage only becoming public after it was retrieved after Palestinian combatants downed an Israeli drone.
In response to the killings, Gaza’s media office condemned the incident as evidence of a severe crisis within the Israeli occupation. They denounced the “vindictive” actions of the occupation army, emphasizing the brutality of killing civilians in such a manner.
The media office further held the Israeli occupation, the United States and the international community responsible for enabling Tel Aviv’s crimes against Palestinian civilians.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted the ongoing atrocities committed by Israeli forces, stressing that over 31,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since Oct. 7 in what is widely regarded as genocide.
Meanwhile, the United Nations expressed profound concern on Friday regarding the footage of the Israeli drones bombing the four Palestinian youths in Khan Yunis, stating that the incident warrants an investigation.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq addressed the footage, stating “Secretary-General [Antonio Guterres] is deeply troubled by the video footage.” Haq further conveyed Guterres’ call for a “thorough, independent and credible” investigation into the killings of unarmed Palestinians.
Highlighting the importance of abiding by international humanitarian law, Haq emphasized the UN chief’s urging for all parties to adhere to the principles of distinguishing civilians from combatants and proportionality.
The footage’s release comes as the latest data shows that over 32,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have been killed since the beginning of the conflict on Oct. 7. Nearly 74,300 other Gazans have been wounded amid Israel’s widespread destruction of Gaza and its blockade preventing critical food and medical supplies reaching civilians.
Haq also made a statement regarding Israel’s recent annexation of eight square kilometers (three square miles) of internationally recognized Palestinian territory in the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank.
Haq stressed that efforts to alter the status of contested Palestinian territory should not occur outside of negotiations between Israel and the people of the West Bank. He reiterated previous UN concerns about similar incidents regarding the occupation.
Israel reportedly declared the land as “state land,” in an announcement reportedly involving Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich, known for his extremist and very radical views on Palestinians.
In a statement, Smotrich described the move as “significant and strategic” and necessary for the continued establishment of illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
According to estimates from the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, over 720,000 Israelis reside in illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, both of which are internationally recognized as Palestinian territory.
